Thorpe

Police Chief Charlie Thorpe would like 10 new positions, including eight sworn officers, with four for regular patrols and one DUI specialist; an elder-crimes detective; a special operations sergeant; and a school resource officer who would be contracted to Epiphany Cathedral School.

VENICE — There was a common theme in the presentations the City Council heard during its strategic planning meeting Monday from the police and fire chiefs and Public Works and airport directors: “We need help.”

Between them, Police Chief Charlie Thorpe and Fire Chief Frank Giddens said they would like to hire 21 more people next year, with Giddens proposing six more in the following year.

Giddens

Fire Chief Frank Giddens said he needs six more firefighter/EMTs next year and another six in the following year, as well as three addition paramedics in 2025. The personnel would increase engine staffing from two to three persons and provide a second rescue unit for the island.
